Angelina Jolie's Tourist Disappoints at Box Office

Despite months of intense promotion, Angelina Jolie's The Tourist failed to crack $20 million in box office receipts during its opening weekend.

Costarring Johnny Depp, the sexy spy thriller cost more than $100 million to produce, but raked in just $17 million, Entertainment Weekly reports -- landing the flick at number two behind The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which itself earned a disappointing $24.5 million.

Critics' reviews for the Jolie-Depp caper -- which was filmed in Venice, Italy and other romantic European locales -- probably didn't help.

"In a year of craptaculars, The Tourist deserves burial at the bottom of the 2010 dung heap," Rolling Stone's Peter Travers sniped.

Added the New York Times: "When she {Jolie] first appears in a come-hither outfit and a small private smile, she looks ready for liftoff. She never ignites, and neither does the movie."

Johnny Depp: Angelina Jolie Has "Dark, Perverse Sense of Humor"

Team Angelina has a new member.

In the January issue of Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp tells rocker Patti Smith it was a "pleasant surprise" working with Angelina Jolie on their upcoming thriller, The Tourist (in theaters December 10).

"You don't know what she might be like -- if she has any sense of humor at all," the actor, 47, tells the mag of the star, who has six kids with beau Brad Pitt. "I was so pleased to find that she is incredibly normal, and has a wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor."

Depp, who has children Lily-Rose, 11, and Jack, 8, with girlfriend of 12 years Vanessa Paradis, even likens the Oscar winner, 35, to another film legend.

"I've had the honor and the pleasure and the gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years," he says. "You you know, you sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she's hilarious. Angie's got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach."

The three-time Oscar nominee also admits he landed in acting as a fluke in his early twenties. "I had no desire, no interest, really in it at all," he says. "I was a musician and I was a guitarist, and that's what I wanted to do."

Depp now has a different idea about what he wants to tackle next. "[Marlon Brando said,] ‘Why don't you just take a year and go and study Shakespeare, or go and study Hamlet. . . and play that part,’" he tells the mag. "And I would like to. I'd really, really like to."

Angelina Jolie: I Don't Want My Film to Be "Too Heavy"

First-time director Angelina Jolie opened up to Hungarian-language site Vasarnapi Hirek about shooting her untitled Bosnian war epic, which follows a romance between a Muslim woman and Serbian man. (IndieWire first turned up the interview.)

Jolie, 35, says she shot the movie twice: once in English, once in the native language of the mostly-Eastern European actors. "We actually shot a full version in their native language and we shot a full version in English," Jolie explained.

"We shot two complete films. I was only able to do it because the actors were so fluent in English so they were willing to work hard and do the scenes in two languages," the mother of six and love to Brad Pitt said.

And the Hollywood A-lister might even make her directorial debut a black-and-white affair. "It's shot in color but it could transfer to black and white. We haven't decided that," she explained. "We put a series of pictures together in black and white and it was beautiful."

Still, despite those high-brow elements, Jolie insisted: "The important thing is I want to make sure that we make a film for people who just want to go to the movies to watch a love story. To not be put off by anything that seems too heavy."

Continued the star: "We want to walk that fine line to make it accessible to everybody because it's important for as many people to see it."
